Let me tell you first that there various kinds of corns available and grown on our globe. But there is no one of the kind that pops and gets the name popcorn. Hence a kernel of the corn that pops is a special kind of corn with certain elements in it.
And the main reason of the pop is the water content in the corn. Yes! There is some amount of water inside the kernel of this type of corn which is being surrounded by a shell. This shell is referred as the hull. So whenever you cook or heat up the kernels in a vessel or the microwave, the water inside the kernel shell will get heated turns into vapor and generate pressure inside the shell.
Thus when sufficient amount of pressure is generated the shell breaks down and this causing the kernels to pop. Thus in this way the water get released, the shell breaks and the corn pops up to turn into a fluffy piece of popcorn.
This was the secret behind the corn dance when they are hot on the sizzling floor.
This popping tales of the popcorns are far more ancient, possibly 4000 years old. However, at present America is at the top in the consumption of the popcorns, above any other country. All the popcorn consumption basically was boosted after the inventions of television, when each family had one at their home.
